I on my personal behalf and on behalf of my IIP family welcome you to our new website. A journey of thousand miles starts from the first step; this golden step was taken on 14th April, 1960.

Since then, several of our scientists and staff and our previous directors have indeed worked hard in laying a very strong foundation; a foundation which has helped us not only to meet but also to exceed the expectations of our stake holders. The 52 golden years of the CSIR-Indian Institute of Petroleum are full of several foot prints etched in the history of IIP. We have contributed immensely in bringing up the oil industry from its infancy to the 4th largest oil industry in the world today; a string of 22 refineries processing 218 MT crude oil per annum.

We always feel proud to mention that every refinery in our country has either a technology or a product or a service from CSIR-IIP. CSIR-IIP has an enviable track record in developing technologies from basic research and following up to its commercialization. We have developed the necessary infrastructure to carry out cutting edge basic research and then to translate to applications; leading to technology, process design and scale-up. Over the last 20 years, we have made a conscious decision to explore opportunities overseas and we have been greatly successful in carrying out studies, revamps as well as licensing grass roots units abroad. In view of depleting hydrocarbon resources, we have diversified our research to renewables; in particular bio-fuels such as bio diesel, bio ethanol, biojet fuel and direct conversion of biomass to commercial transportation fuels.

 This has been our major focus in the XI Five Year Plan. As we enter the XII five year plan, we have identified new areas ranging from Adequate & Clean Energy, Advance Materials, Strategic Materials, Sustainable Chemical Industry covering various subareas like Energy Efficient Technologies, Catalysts for Sustainable Energy, New Generation Lubricants & Additives, Biomass to Energy , Catalysts for Specialty Chemicals, Research Initiative on Emission Reduction, Advance Carbon Materials and Waste to Wealth. We have also made new forays into research on new generation photovoltaic cells. With the current sophistication in research, it is clear that strategic partnership and collaboration need to be created for world class research outputs. Keeping this in mind, we have created strategic collaborations with research organizations, universities and institutes’ both in India and abroad. These collaborations have brought immense value to our research and we are always looking forward to form new partnership to explore new areas.

One of the institute’s mandates is to train and develop the human resource of the oil industry. Right from 1960, we have carried out several training courses ranging from refining to petrochemicals to analytical sciences including special topics on areas of topical interest to the oil industry. Over the last 52 years, we have trained more than 7000 engineers from both public and private sector and we are proud to mention that almost every chemical engineer in the oil industry has been through one or more of our training courses. I would like to put on record my deep thanks and appreciation to our present and past scientists and officers who have taken this institute to this level. Of course, this would not have been possible without a strong support and confidence that we have enjoyed from our stake holders, clients, licensees and well-wishers. I thank you for the same.
