TECHNOLOGY: Sulpholane Extraction Technology for Production of Food Grade Hexane and SBP Solvents
APPLICATIONS:
- For the production of food grade hexane.
- Special boiling point solvents.
- Low aromatic feed stocks for petrochemical industries/ fertilizer units.
- Production of low aromatic feedstocks for fertilizer and petrochemical plants.
TECHNOLOGY STATUS: - Jointly developed with EIL
- Two commercial units in operation, one in BPCL,
Mumbai and another in CPCL,Chennai
| Products | FGH | ON STREAM | | 1. | BPCL,MUMBAI | 25,000 TPA | 1989 | | 2. | CPCL,CHENNAI | 25,000 TPA | 1992 |
SALIENT FEATURES:
- Use of Sulpholane, as extraction solvent, possesses a favorable combination of solvent power and selectivity.
- Globally hydrogenation route is preferred for removal of benzene and olefins from naphtha fractions.
- Hydrogenation route is unattractive for feeds with high aromatic content, as it requires higher capital investment
- Sulpholane extraction technology developed at IIP can accept feed with any benzene content and is economical as compared with hydrogenation.
Techno-Economics:
- Maximum units operational world over, are based on sulpholane process
- The typical costs* for a unit to process 200,000 MTPA of light naphtha as feed are as follows :
Investment
Million US $ 15
(Basis: turnkey installation, battery limits, Indian location, March 2004)
Utilities (per MT of feed)
Electricity, MW 0.13
Steam @ 15 Kg/cm 2 ), MT/hr 7
Water, cooling ( 10 oC rise), MT/hr 500
- Pay back period > 3.5 yrs
