TECHNOLOGY: Di-Tertiary Butyl Para Cresol (BHT)
It is general purpose antioxidants and is widely used as additive in numerous products.
APPLICATIONS:
- An excellent antioxidant for lubricating oils.
- BHT is one of the approved additives for aviation gasoline and aircraft turbine and jet engine fuels.
- Cutting oils, spindle oils, hydraulic oils and other specialty oils are stabilized by the addition of BHT.
- It is useful as a non-discolouring and non-staining rubber antioxidant for a variety for rubbers. It is also used as antioxidant during vulcanization.
- It is used to stabilize textile oils, leather treating oils and other fatty oils, waxes and greases etc. It is particularly effective in the prevention of oxidation and deterioration of insecticides composition containing pyrethrin.
- BHT is widely used antioxidants for fats and foods containing fats for example tallow, fat-fortifies animal feeds, vegetable oils, baked and fried foods, potato chips, crackers and premixes, chicken fat, essential oil and vitamins.
TECHNOLOGY STATUS: - One Commercial plant of 150 TPA in operation, Balmer Lawrie, Chennai.
- One plant of 500 TPA erecting stage TFCL, Mumbai.
SALIENT FEATURES:
- The process utilizes, butane-butene cut from refinery/ naphtha crackers.
- Feed stock flexibility, B-B cut containing isobutylene in the range of 15-50% can be used.
- No purification treatment of raw materials is required.
- Effluents are negligible, all unreacted materials are recycled. Cooling water and steam condensate are also recycled.
- Special type of continuous reactor gives high throughput per unit volume than the other available processes. The process can be operated batch-wise also.
- Conversion of raw materials is higher than in other processes.
- Exit hydrocarbon gases are used as boiler fuel, this reduces the utility costs substantially.
- The process is not labour intensive. Most of the critical equipment are operated using automatic controls for safety and quality of products.
